Fire Safety in the Workplace
As an employer in England or Wales, you are responsible for the fire safety of every person on your premises; whether they are employees, colleagues or visitors of any kind. Some elements of fire safety may seem like common sense, but it’s important to know what is required of you by law.
You can find full details of the fire safety regulations by clicking here, but the basic steps that you must take (or oversee) are as follows:
• Carry out regular fire risk assessments
• Consider who may be especially at risk
• Remove or reduce the risk of fire as far as is reasonably possible
• Provide general fire precautions to deal with any remaining risks
• Take measures to provide protection from flammable or explosive substances
• Create a plan to deal with any emergencies that arise
• Provide training to ensure that your staff are aware of the above plan
Of course, the most fundamental element of fire safety is to ensure that everyone on your property has the best possible chance of escaping the threat of potential fires. Fire doors play a vital role in this aim, which is why they should be a top priority for every business.
Here at Downham Doors we supply two main types of fire doors. Our personnel fire escapes can be tailored to fit single or double doorways with a range of optional extra such as door closers, D handles and drop bars.
For industrial settings we also offer roller shutter doors with a 2 hour fire rating. With an automatic closing mechanism, these doors will seal off individual areas in the event of a fire, giving you vital time to evacuate the building and await the fire services. This can be particularly effective in isolating any areas that contain highly flammable substances.
